Night Nanny & Newborn Care FAQs

Becoming a parent comes with a lot of questions, especially when it comes to newborn sleep, overnight care, and postpartum support. This FAQ covers the most common questions families ask about night nannies, newborn care specialists, postpartum doulas, and infant sleep support. If you’re considering overnight help for your baby, these answers will help you understand what to expect and how Night Owl Nanny Care supports families during the early months.

About Our Services

  • A night nanny is a trained overnight caregiver who comes to your home to handle feedings, diaper changes, soothing, and infant sleep support — so you can actually sleep. Unlike a babysitter, night nannies specialize in newborn care and often have newborn care specialist (NCS) training, postpartum doula training, or nursing training.

  • These titles are often used interchangeably, but there are some distinctions worth knowing:

    • Night nanny: Focuses on overnight infant care, including feedings, diapering, and sleep routines.

    • Newborn care specialist (NCS): Provides daytime or overnight care and coaches parents on feeding, routines, and infant development.

    • Night nurse: This term is sometimes used interchangeably with night nanny or newborn care specialist, but in a clinical context it refers to a licensed medical professional. Night Owl Nanny Care provides expert non-medical infant care — if your baby has complex medical needs, we're happy to help you determine whether our services are the right fit.

In practice, many caregivers are trained across multiple roles. At Night Owl Nanny Care, we match you based on your baby's needs — not just a job title.

  • We offer a full range of infant and childcare services:

    • Night nanny care

    • 24/7 infant care

    • Sleep training and sleep shaping

    • Postpartum doula support

    • Lactation support

    • Special needs care

    • Full-time nanny placement

Our team includes newborn care specialists, nurses, and trained doulas, as well as experienced full-time nannies for ongoing childcare placements.

  • Both provide in-home postpartum support, but their focus differs. A night nanny specializes in overnight infant care, including feedings, sleep routines, and diapering. A postpartum doula offers broader support, including emotional guidance, breastfeeding assistance, light household help, and infant care during the day or night. Many families use both, and many of our caregivers are trained in both roles.

  • Night nannies are trained professionals who specialize in newborn and infant care. They establish sleep routines, support feeding, and provide structured overnight care - it's not casual babysitting. Most have training in newborn care, doula work, or nursing and bring a level of expertise that goes well beyond general childcare.

Booking & Getting Started

  • Getting started is straightforward:

    1. Complete the parent application.

    2. We review your schedule, your baby's needs, and walk you through our team and services.

    3. We match you with qualified caregivers or launch a personalized search on your behalf.

We recommend reaching out before your due date - many families begin their search several months in advance, especially during high-demand seasons.

  • Most families are matched with a qualified caregiver within 1 and 5 business days, depending on availability and your specific needs. For the best chance of securing your preferred schedule, we recommend booking early - ideally before your baby arrives.

  • We recommend starting your search 3–5 months before your due date. Many families book early - particularly during busy seasons - and earlier searches give you more caregiver options and scheduling flexibility. That said, if you're already postpartum and need support now, reach out anyway. We work quickly and will do everything we can to find the right caregiver for your family as soon as possible.

What to Expect

  • During an overnight shift, your night nanny will:

    • Feed your baby (bottle or breastfeeding support)

    • Handle diaper changes and soothing

    • Support healthy sleep routines

    • Sterilize bottles and pump parts

    • Tidy the nursery

    • Assist with infant laundry if requested

    • Provide a morning update so you're always in the loop

  • Yes. Night nannies rest when your baby sleeps, staying alert and ready for feedings and nighttime needs. This is standard practice and allows both you and your caregiver to function well. If you prefer fully awake overnight care, that option is available at an additional rate.

  • Yes. Families provide bottles, formula or breast milk, diapers, wipes, and a safe sleep space. Your caregiver will confirm any additional needs during onboarding.

  • Your caregiver will track feedings, sleep patterns, and nighttime routines and you can share those notes with your pediatrician. They do not provide medical advice, but their detailed records are often very useful at well-baby appointments.

Credentials & Safety

  • Yes. Every caregiver undergoes criminal background and reference checks, and we verify all training, certifications, and professional credentials before they work with any family. All caregivers are also certified in infant CPR and First Aid and adhere to safe sleep practices.

  • Safety is built into every step of our process - from thorough vetting and credential verification to safe sleep training and infant CPR certification. We take caregiver screening seriously so you can sleep confidently knowing your baby is in good hands.

Specialized Care

  • Yes. Many of our caregivers have extensive experience supporting breastfeeding routines, pumping schedules, and feeding logistics - while making sure you get the rest you need.

  • Yes. We have caregivers with specific experience caring for multiples, and we'll match you with someone suited to your family's needs.

  • Yes. We work with families of medically complex and special needs infants and ensure careful matching to caregivers with relevant training and experience.

  • Yes. Many of our caregivers are experienced in sleep shaping and gradual sleep conditioning methods - helping your baby build healthy sleep habits and making the transition to independent sleep smoother for everyone.

Pricing & Logistics

  • Rates generally range from $42–$75+ per hour, with an 8-hour minimum for overnight shifts. Pricing varies based on caregiver experience, the nature of the care (such as sleep training, multiples, or special needs), and your location. Contact us for a personalized quote.

  • Most families work with a night nanny for around 12-16 weeks postpartum, though this varies based on the baby's development and the family's needs. Some continue longer for sleep shaping, multiples care, or special circumstances. We offer flexible arrangements to fit your schedule and budget.

  • Tipping is never required, but always appreciated. Some families choose to give a small gift or card as a thank-you, particularly after longer engagements.

  • At Night Owl Nanny Care, these roles all provide the same high-quality overnight and newborn care — the titles reflect different training paths, not different levels of service. When you work with us, we match you based on your family's specific needs, schedule, and situation. You don't need to know which credential to ask for. That's our job.
